Now Answers to Economic Issues Questions

Open Question: When did New England change from it's own colony-like form into the 6 states it is now?

I am in a colonial history class, and it just kind of stuck me that before 1776 that the area of New England was not much spoken about the names they are given today (Massachusetts, Maine, Vermont, etc). Why is this so, and why didn't they just claim the entire area as one state? Was there religious differences, or economic differences, currency issues, or what is the reasoning of breaking up New England into these many smaller colonies? (I've heard talk of Massachusetts before, but I never really heard about Vermont or New Hampshire or anything)  more

Open Question: Does wealth=success??????????

I come from an upper-class family, and I can't help but feel that many people feel that money equals success. Personally, I feel they are two entirely different things. I know plenty of wealthy people that are not what I will call a success. I also know plenty of middle to lower class people who feel they will not be successful unless they have big money. I find this a little interesting, when I talk about this issue with my friends of different economic backgrounds the answer usually is that you are successful when you have money. They say I would not understand because my family has money. What is your opinion on this. I agree with all of you.  more

Open Question: Lucent Technologies: Evaluate asset, debt & equity structure as well as trends & changes on common sz bal sheet?

Here are the questions: 2. Evaluate the asset, debt, and equity structure of Lucent Technologies, as well as trends and changes found on the common-size balance sheet. 3. What concerns would investors and creditors have based on only this information? 4. What additional finanacial and non-financial information would investors and creditors need to make investing and lending decisions for Lucent Technologies? The info: Executive Summary We design and deliver the systems, software and services that drive next-generation communications networks. Backed by Bell Labs research and development, we use our strengths in mobility, optical, access, data and voice networking technologies, as well as services, to create new revenue-generating opportunities for our customers, while enabling them to quickly deploy and better manage their networks. Our customer base includes communications service providers, governments and enterprises worldwide. We have three segments organized around the products and services we sell. The reportable segments are Integrated Network Solutions (“INS”), Mobility Solutions (“Mobility”) and Lucent Worldwide Services (“Services”). INS provides a broad range of software and wireline equipment related to voice networking (primarily consisting of switching products, which we sometimes refer to as convergence solutions, and voice messaging products), data and network management (primarily consisting of access and related data networking equipment and operating support software) and optical networking. Mobility provides software and wireless equipment to support radio access and core networks. Services provides deployment, maintenance, professional and managed services in support of both our product offerings as well as multi-vendor networks. Beginning in fiscal 2001, the global telecommunications market deteriorated, resulting from a decrease in the competitive local exchange carrier market and a significant reduction in capital spending by established service providers. This trend intensified during fiscal 2002 and continued into fiscal 2003. Reasons for the market deterioration included general economic slowdown, network overcapacity, customer bankruptcies, network build-out delays and limited availability of capital. We believe that the market for telecommunications equipment has stabilized and is starting to grow in certain areas. The growing demands of enterprises and consumers for additional services tailored to their needs is creating the need for a new convergence of networks, technologies and applications. Required 1. Using the Consolidated Balance Sheets for Lucent Technologies for September 30, 2004 and 2003, prepare a common-size balance sheet. 2. Open Question: are questions about the 2010 election and 2012 election further proof that our?

two-party dominated system are truly killing this nation? We have an economic crisis unfolding in front of us, amongst other issues, and we have people who are focusing on elections 2 years from now... Why are people so consumed with elections in a time like this? Why are people more concerned with when "their" party can gain seats than with how the country actually turns out? suthern, weird...I did the same thing for roughly a week following the election returns and then again during Thanksgiving... sometimes it just gets to be a bit monotonous Michael, no you're job is to talk with your representatives about issues, solutions and policy. You can notify your rep of problems you see arising. This reliance on "them" for solutions is troubling to me.  more

Open Question: REPUBLICANS, why are you so PESSIMISTIC all of a sudden now that OBAMA is on his way to the WHITE HOUSE ?

You guys sure did not seem this way when we had that slight recession back during the late 80's. As a matter of fact things are right where they are now since Bush number 1 left the chair. Records prove that most Democratic Presidents are better when it comes to economic and domestic issues. They said Bill Clinton and his staff could not get the job done. And look at what happened. He went out with the highest approval ratings of any President ever. So why do you keep doubting the power of an intelligent Party, when you know very well that things are going to go well again. You were wrong about every single thing about Obama thus far. And you trusted Bush to get things done, he didn't. Why should America listen to you ? Sounds to me like you are in denial. What is up with that ? Where is your patriotism, where is your "faith". You claim to have it, but your actions and words say otherwise. Now you see why people are disgusted with the GOP................. Too much pride. <<<<  more

Resolved Question: Thoughts on the current political crisis in Canada?

I'd like to get opinions from as much Canadians as possible on this one, as well as people from other countries. I will retell the events again just in case you don't know what's going on. In Ottawa, politicans are playing dirty and dangerous. Disatisifed and angered by Prime Minister Stephen Harper's Conservative minority government and the way it fails to handle the economic crisis effectively as well as other issues, the opposition parties----the Liberals, NDP, and Bloc Quebecois formed an agreement that a Liberal-NDP coalition would be formed (with the support of Bloc Quebecois----who are Quebec separatists), and this alliance intends to wrestle power away from Harper and the Conservatives. The coalition is headed by the Liberal leader Stephanie Dion, who was blamed for the miserable losses the Liberals suffered in Oct 14 federal election, and he is not a good leader, but the coalition decided that beating the Conservatives is more important. To convince the public to be on their side, the coalition announced its own plan on how to solve the economic crisis as well as other problems facing Canada. Despite of harsh reactions from Harper, who commented it to be the "biggest political game in Canadian history", the opposition argued that they are doing what needs to be done while Harper and the Conservatives are doing things badly. What do you think? Do you think it is the correct or incorrect way democracy should be done and expressed? Why do these politicians just have to keep fighting each other? Do they really care about ordinary people like us? How did ordinary people like us elect these politicians into power in the first place?! Yeah well... you have a point... we can't really do anything about it... or can we? who knows...  more

Open Question: Thoughts on Biden's speech yesterday on the Power of Example?

After a long silence, Biden delivered a speech yesterday. He invoked a phrase he has used before, one of "recapturing the totality of America's strength." Referring to recent events in India, Biden noted the: "challenge to democratic nation states from radical ideologies. "no one country can control these forces [challenging us at present and in the future]. "But more than any other country in the world, we have the ability to affect them if we use the totality of our strength." "And bringing together Senator Clinton, Secretary Gates, Eric Holder, Governor Napolitano, Susan Rice, and General Jones, the president-elect has assembled a national security team that is poised, in my view, to recapture the totality of America's strength." "Each member shares our conviction that strength and wisdom must go hand in hand. "Each member believes, as we do, that America's security is not a partisan issue. Witness the team. "Each member understands that America's military might and economic strength must married to the power of our ideas and our ideals if we are to deal effectively with dealing with the forces of change, some of which I've mentioned, "and if we're going keep this country we love so dearly prosperous and free. "These are extraordinary times. That's not in a flight of fancy or exaggeration. These are extraordinary times. We face extraordinary challenges. "But I am, as the president-elect is, optimistic, absolutely optimistic that this team, with the president-elect at our helm, will see to it that "America leads not only by the example of our power but by the power of our example." _____________________________ So: What are some basic, yet powerful examples that the president-elect and his team can provide for American citizens, and, subsequently, to citizens of other countries? What are some examples that would provide for an increase of American strength in the form of morale, rooted in "our ideas and ideals" as a "nation-state" that is "prosperous and free?" . . here is a link to the speech. it is interesting to watch the exchange and reactions here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_yRTieO9Gs4 . .  more

Resolved Question: Where did the GOP go wrong in 2008?

What happened? California, Florida, and Arizona all banned gay marriage and Arkansas banned gay adoption. We clearly haven't become more liberal on social issues. But on economic issues, did the GOP blink when they shouldn't have? I think that if McCain and GOP incumbents had forcefully opposed this bailout, they could have isolated themselves from George Bush and maybe even tacitly tied Bush and Obama together to special interests. Could McCain have won if he strongly, forcefully opposed the bailout-boondoggle?  more

Resolved Question: I need some help with home made cat food?

for those following my other cat questions Tigger ( my male cat) has some skin issues that are caused by the food. His old vet put him on a hypoallergenic food but turns out that isn't doing him much good. He isn't sick but he does have a lot of dry skin and he's been at a dry patch on his back a lot. He went the vet not that long back and he is healthy but he does have some skin issues. My vet suggested going to a wet food that helps the coat. Because of the allergies and because of the cost of grain free tin cat food I thought perhaps it would be healthier and more economic to make my own. The only grain free food I could find is $2 a tin which would be $28 a week for that same price I could buy enough chicken to feed them for 2 weeks or more. I had some turkey wings left over from the last turkey dinner I cooked. I boiled up the meat then blended it up with a little of the liquid to make it close to the consistency of the tin food I feed my female cat. First they were interested when I gave them a taste but when I gave it to them for dinner they were not too happy with it. Tigger turned up his nose all together. So that morning I tried again but added some of their previous food they ate more but didn't finish. I have been reading a bit on raw food and all meat diets. While I don't think I'm ready to feed raw foods I do want to include more human grade meat into their diet maybe eliminating commercial cat food all together. Any idea of what I may be doing wrong or some other foods I could try, or perhaps another way of preparing? Also any ideas for how to help tiggers dry patches. my boss suggested olive oil.  more

Open Question: Why do we elect the people we do to the presidency?

I know as Americans we disagree about a great deal of things from moral issues to the preservation of our planet. But there are two things we all hold important and that is our economy and national security. And I did`nt create this thread to bash anyone but I believe we as a nation elected Barack Obama because we believed he was best suited to fix our economy right? But why I mean he is a lawyer and has little experience in politics even. Look at the last 4 Presidents we have chosen. Bush Senior - WWII Veteran, CIA director, and successful in Texas oil. Bill Clinton - Lawyer, Congressman, State Governor and Attorney General. Bush Jr. - Family History in politics, Governor, Succes in Texas Oil. Barack Obama - Lawyer, Brief stint in congress. Not one of these men had any real background in economics. Some of them ran succesful businesses some did not. But since the economy is so important why then do we elect the people we do to the presidency when they have no real economic knowledge?  more

Open Question: Question concerning Libertarians?

So, I registered as a Libertarian when I was 17 going on 18 (i'm 22 now,) I didn't always identify with the party until I actually read about it and its platform - I have not questioned those loyalties, up until now. Naturally, as a Libertarian I believe in small government, minimal government intervention in economic and social issues and in general some degree of self-reliance and personal responsibility. But.. I also believe that every American deserves the right to health care(necessary human right) and higher education(This I feel benefits the economy just as much as the individual) and that both should be available to everyone at an absolute minimal cost, if any. So I guess my question is, is this reconcilable with the Libertarian party platform? I mean I suppose it all comes down to an issue of priority, as in where you allocated the minimal taxing and spending that the government participates in. I don't want to change parties over this but I simply could not see myself supporting any party long-term which does not view these two crucial aspects of our society as absolute rights.  more

Open Question: English help!!!! Correct my poor English, please. Thanx in advance.?

However, China still names itself as a communism country. It still has many differences and arguements with western. Economically, China has made a huge progress since it reformed. It helps china from one of the poorest country become the second biggest economy in this world. It only takes about 20 years and nowadays people had started to predict when will china overcome the super power U.S. On the other hand, china also pays for the globalization, those negative aspect of globalization could be best to show what China has lost. First, because the globalization, China has to make deal with the world, which means the government of China(Communism party) can not do whatever they want to do. Second, the globalization let more people go to China. One day, the western media may be able to there as well which may undermine the power of goverment harshly. Third, In China, the income disparity also polarized the rich and poor to a serious scale. During 1978 to 1996, the real GDP grew on average by over 9 per cent a year. The living standard has been considerably improved due to the economic reform launched in 1978. The policy was “letting few people get rich first” through special, preferential policies, which became the dominant reason for the widening gap of rich and poor pose in China. This undermines the stablity of China. Fourth, since China joined the world, outside of china, people pay much more attention on it, the bad human rights record, the issues of Taiwan and Tibet have been criticized by western. Inside of China, more people have been abroad and more MNGs have opened in China, both of them will influence the stability of the government.  more

Open Question: Concerning Proposition 8?

Due to the fact that Proposition 8 concerns only the state of California, allow me to provide brief background for the unaware. Not to long ago, California passed a law allowing homosexuals the right of marriage. Resultantly, because the citizens of California were not involved in the decision, there has been a huge reaction against this motion. Proposition 8 is the ballot that allowed the people of Cali to vote on whether or not gay/lesbian marriage should be permissible. Before I state my opinion, understand that I live in a different country altogether, having no personal stake in the issue. Also be aware that for obvious reasons I will not state my sexual preference. I believe that Proposition 8 is, put bluntly, pure bullshit. It is completely rooted in homophobia, and in all aspects would be an arbitrary decree for the Californian government to hand down. As the specific concerns are with those whom believe that marriage is the union between men and woman, I fail to comprehend your reasoning. If you truly believe in the aforementioned rules of marriage, condemn those whom are homosexual to hell in your hearts but limit it to just that. As the world’s views are not in alliance with yours, it would be very invasive for you to decree how they can live based off of your own opinion. Seeing as how the State of California is not in danger of economic or political ruin as a result of legal gay/lesbian marriage, I again fail to see the detrimental effects that it will even have if two women or men are allowed to be together. If there is something I have overlooked, or if you have a reasonable rebuttal, supply a counter-argument. I will be open to your opinion, but understand I want it to be supplied off of hard facts, and solid and sober reasoning.  more

Open Question: I have a new idea for a class forum for grades K-12, How to implement it?

My idea revolves around the disabled society. A class that teaches about disabilities that is taught in the same manner as history, math, english, black history, etc. My idea is that this class be taught at levels K through 12, in the same manner that these other subject matters are taught. Some possible topics include: basic fundamentals of varying disabilities and their impacts in a disabled persons personal and family life, their habits and decisions, as well as work related issues concering the disabled. It could include ADA Guidelines and rules, disabled people in history, and in the present, who have or are making a difference (i.e. S. Hawkings, C. Reeves, M. Fox). Other topics include: Specialized equipment for the disabled, Insurance issues, medical rights, the personal economic impact of having a disability. I also think that it should highlight on myths and predujices about disabilities based on lack of knowledge and seek to enlighten those prejudices. They could also conduct expirements that allows the able-bodied to see with our eyes. Things like walking correctly with a cane, using a wheelchair in tight facilities, utilizing braces in the correct manner. Things of that nature. The ideas are endless and it would really educate the general public about disability awareness issues. I believe that this could be an important step for the disabled and abled community as a whole. How can this be implented into the school system? It most definitely was. I never had the idea before you asked your question. After thinking about it, I was surprised I've never heard the idea before. Hopefully it will inspire someone someday with the ability to implement it, to do so. We'll just have to wait and see I guess.  more

But, libvrealists just think Trade should be free so as to benefit the most efficient and Trade should be free to achieve interdependence and peace. Marxists are anti-globalization generally, they belive that economic relationship are exploitiative power relationships, and globalization increases the power of mobile capital over workers and of rich countries over poor countries. Further more, marists assum workers impoverushed everywhere and the third world countries’ people are increasingly exploited. Finnaly they think the globalization driven by power which means third world countries or commuinism countries are still controlled by the western which seems stronger. The argument between antiglobalization and proglobalization actually never end, supporters of globalization argue that the anti-globalization movement uses anecdotal evidence to support their protectionist view, whereas worldwide statistics strongly support globalization. Antiglobalization people would always argue that poorer countries are sometimes at disadvantage: While it is true that globalization encourages free trade among countries, there are also negative consequences because some countries try to save their national markets. ‘‘The main export of poorer countries is usually agricultural goods. Larger countries often subsidise their farmers (like the EU Agricultural Policy, which lowers the market price for the poor farmer's crops compared to what it would be under free trade’  more

Resolved Question: Can a fundamentalist really be a national leader?

I have heard many christians claim an atheist should never hold office, and coupling that with the campaign of Sarah Palin (a member of the Assembly of God church), it occured to me: can a fundamentalist be a national leader? Let me clarify: 1. Can someone who sincerely believes we are in the 'end times' be expected to truly focus on economic and environmental issues? This person really believes this is the last generation to live on this planet...can they really even care about the economy or environment? 2. Can comeone who is eager for armegeddon to start really be expected to do anything for middle east peace? They WANT a war in the middle east. 3. Can someone who rejects large portions of science, feels the bible is the final answer on everything, really be expected to support education? 4. Can someone who honestly believes in a magical being in the sky, ritual cannibalism, faith healings (i.e. Benny Hinn) really be trusted to have the judgement to lead? I mean this as a serious question. For fundamentalist who respond I would appreciate a real answer, not random bible quotes or shouts that I am satans minion. Did you read the question? I said FUNDAMENTALIST...that does not include mainstream christians. Since some christians don't seem to get the 'ritual canabilism' I guess you have not given much thought to communion...  more

Resolved Question: Do you think that money should be used on helping the economy or global warming?.... and why?

Im trying to write this essay but I cant seem to figure all of my thoughts out. Do you guys think you can help me? Thank you if you can, and if you cant its okay too. HERE IS THE QUESTION While there are differing views among scientists regarding global warming, do you believe the potential costs to the American economy in terms of diminished economic growth, jobs and higher costs for goods and services are worth the cost of proposed climate policies to address the issue? If so, why? Or, do you believe this money should be spent on other priorities (and if so, where and why)?  more

Voting Question: Can someone please explain to me how rolling back the Bush Tax Cuts is "socialism"?

It's not like capitalism started in 2000 when Bush orchestrated the fiasco known as the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy, something that is massively contributing to the mounting debt. All Obama wants to do is roll them back or let them expire in 2011 and go back to the tax rates that America was at under Bill Clinton...does anyone that could think or breathe remember what it was like living under Bill Clinton? Economic prosperity, no wars, low gas prices. Why is rolling back the Bush tax cuts to get the national debt under control such a huge issue for the right wingers who probably won't even have their social security to look forward too because of Bush?  more

Voting Question: How does nationwide economic slow down affect local county budgets?

lets assume a major metropolitan county last year planned to solve a budget shortfall by hiking their sales tax. But now.....shockingly citizens are learning that in this year's budget, there is another shortfall that needs to be solving with a huge bond issue. Everyone is assuming that this is happening that because of mismanagement and inefficiency..which I am sure there is some of that. But isnt it far more likely that this past year they were counting on more sales transactions than actually occurred and that since the economy slowed down that there were less sales transactions and therefore less revenue? and how much revenue has been lost due to uncollected real estate taxes due to massive foreclosure levels??  more

Voting Question: How educated are you on political issue in South Africa?

Best response I have ever read for 'Apartheid' - South Africa This was a reply to an article, in the South African Mercury Newspaper (last week), where the previously disadvantaged (Black people) stated that it's not too late for the previously advantaged (including whites, Indians and Coloreds) to apologies for apartheid. Check out the reply. Just too hot and so true.Did anyone read the paper last week (Mercury) Where the main headline stated the following? It's not too late for whites to say sorry for Apartheid...... ........Check the email that went around responding to the headline. It's a kick a$$ response!!! 'To the Previously Disadvantaged We are sorry that our ancestors were intelligent, advanced and daring enough to explore the wild oceans to discover new countries and develop them.We are sorry that those who came before us took you out of the bush and taught you that there was more to life than beating drums, killing each other and chasing animals with sticks and stones. We are sorry that they planned, funded and developed roads, towns, mines, factories, airports and harbors, all of which you now claim to be your long deprived inheritance giving you every right to change and rename these at your discretion. We are sorry that our parents taught us the value of small but strong families, to not breed like rabbits and end up as underfed, diseased, illiterate shack dwellers living in poverty. We are sorry that when the evil apartheid government provided you with schools, you decided they'd look better without windows or in piles of ashes. We happily gave up those bad days of getting spanked in our all white schools for doing something wrong and much prefer these days of freedom where problems can be resolved with knives and guns.We are sorry that it is hard to shake off the bitterness of the past when you keep on raping, torturing and killing our friends and family members, and then hide behind the fence of 'human rights' with smiles on your faces. We are sorry that we do not trust the government... We have no reason to be so suspicious because none of these poor "hard working intellectuals" have ever been involved in any form of "corruption or irregularities".We are sorry that we do not trust the police force and, even though they have openly admitted that they have lost the war against crime and criminals, we should not be negative and just ignore their corruption and carry on hoping for the best.We are sorry that it is more important to you to have players of colour in our national teams than winning games and promoting patriotism. We know that sponsorship doesn't depend on a team's success. We are sorry that our border posts have been flung open and now left you competing for jobs against illegal immigrants from our beautiful neighboring countries. All of them countries that have grown into economic powerhouses after kicking out the 'settlers'.We are sorry that we don't believe in witchcraft, beet root and garlic cures, urinating on street corners, virginity testing, slaughtering of bulls in our back yards, trading women for cattle and other barbaric practices.Maybe we just grew up differently. We are sorry that your medical care, water supplies, roads, railways and electricity supplies are going down the toilet because skilled people who could have planned for and resolved these issues had to be thrown away because they were of the wrong ethnic background and now have to work in foreign countries where their skills are highly appreciated. We are so sorry that we'd like this country to fulfill its potential so we can once again be proud South Africans. Resolved Question: is Obama a fake liberal?

I am not a big fan of liberals but I can spot a fake one any day (aka allen colmes). To me a real liberal is Dennis Kucinich! now on economic issues he kinda scares me (he once said he belives wealth should be majorly redistributed!) but on social issues he's right on the money! I would have voted 4 him 4 president! I have no problem with real liberals, its fake liberals like hilary, edwards, and obama that I have a problem with! Its the same reason I voted 4 nader in 2000,2004, and this election!  more

Voting Question: Politically, Economically, and Socially what is Vladimir Putin? Anyone think that he's a communist?

It's pretty weird because Putin Used to be a member of the communist party, but now that's a major opposition to the party in charge now. But what are the general goals of the current party or Putin? How does Dmitry Medvedev fit with this category? (probably similar to Putin) It is pretty likely that Putin would want former countries of the USSR to unite and became one but that doesn't really suggest any economic representation. How about social traits? Its portrayed by western media that he's white crazy and says extremely vulgar and serious things but again that isnt so much a representation of political beliefs. I don't think you can call him a communist because look at how many rich people live in Moscow. It doesn't seem like he has any problems with them, excluding those who interfere with his political agenda (Boris Berezovsky and the yokos scandal) Why do they have a flat income tax? That seems like something the libertarians would want. Also why does Russia Support Iran's nuclear program? How is that suppose to help them? Wouldn't they fear that Iran may be a future danger to themselves? Or are they just not thinking ahead. Is it a money issue? Does Russia make a lot of money from this? Any Russia Political expert would help! Have A Nice day  more

Resolved Question: Of all the causes to blame for mens changing roles in society, why do so many blame feminism?

It can seem like a constant call: "Families are collapsing" - blame feminism "Jobs are no longer secure" - blame feminism "Men are no longer heads of the household" - blame feminism. "Men are no longer valued as fathers" - blame feminism This last week I have read substantially on Mens issues from a variety of sources, and it seems very clear that mens roles have changed dramatically over the last 50-60 years especially. But how many of those changes are much at all to do with feminism? Economies and free trade have dramatically altered job security, and the nature of jobs. Globalisation has led to the export of unskilled jobs to nations which can do them at the lowest rates, which in turn has led to much greater wealth disparity and a widening gap between skilled and unskilled labor. Massive political changes have shifted the balance of power between workers and corporations in hosts of ways. The mans role and ability to fulfill the role of provider has been drastically affected by all these things. In many ways feminism has bought women forward to the point where they now participate in the home as economic allies and partners, capable of contributing (on average) very close to the same income as a man. Why is this a bad thing? Of all the things that are responsible for the erosion of male identity, and changing roles, why do so many choose to blame feminism?  more

Resolved Question: will Obama turn the vicious circle around? ?

Here are my humble thoughs on the elected president of the usa. Apparently Obama will turn the things around based on same particular which suggest the change. he appointed the Economi proffesor of columbia university as a treasure secretary she was really smart choice in order to win the economic confidence back.so on the other hand Obama will have really comprehensive and capable team which is gonna give him really strong boost in order to get the things back on track. So that Obama will find and produce some particular solutions in fixing the unemployment rate. and the usa' economi will create susbstansial job opportunities for americans. the way it did before. But on the other hand there is a investigation which was released two days ago. it says ıf the usa can not the things get back on track. the usa will be diveded into six states because of the economic turmoil. I will look forward to reading your precious comments on this issue.  more

Resolved Question: The logic behind America's conflicts?

Ever since 9/11, we've become so divided its becoming sickening to me. The physical damage is nothing compared to the mental damage these "terrorists" have successfully caused to our society. First of all, I haven't heard the word left/right thrown around until the Iraq war started gaining major scrutiny- in which case, nearly all of America took the bait as a scapegoat until realizing its fallacy. Are you kidding me? I just want to know if you people realize how much you're polarizing yourselves, we've (I'm first and foremost an American) gone from dignified leaders to burned effigies on the world stage; we look like aggressive maniacs. First off, I understand the word conservative: generally regarding to the economic policy of reduced fiscal spending as well as a federalist republic (less govt involvement)-but conservatives: when are you going to admit that George W. Bush was a horrible president and an unintelligent man. Its not only been documented more than the bible itself, but its been proven through his executive actions. It seems to me that conservatives have honestly lost their touch- believing that criticizm of the Iraq war is a criticizm of their philosophy and way of life- please understand- this is not at all the case; and making up false excuses like "we're fighting for freedom" and "we're not going to wave the white flag of surrender to the terrorists" does not work anymore. 1)We're not fighting for freedom-we invaded a poorly equiped middle eastern country, whose ties to the planner of 9/11 where limited at best as compared to Bush's ties with the bin laden family, whose army we dismembered in less than a week. I don't believe we went to Iraq for oil but I realize people needed a scapegoat and Afghanistan wasn't as well documented with its attrocities againt humanity as Iraq was, so we hit Iraq too. Whose freedom are we fighting for? Do you honestly think these insurgents want to hurt Iraqis?-No! They're just angry we invaded their private space- -FIGHTING AN TRANSLUCENT ENTITY SUCH AS TERRORISM IS COMPARABLE TO TRYING TO PIN POINT EVERY GRAIN OF SAND ON EARTH-its impossible and it will always exist as long as differing sides view one another as the aggressor. -I don't want conservative to believe that this belief is against theirs but I highly doubt that anyone with a shred of compassion towards our truths (whether "right or left") wants this conflict any longer-its not working for the reason I mentioned above, we are fighting a formless army (much like the Colonial army defeated the British with mostly militia help) and I'm sick of playing the British. We are not surrendering, we are in fact, winning by ending this conflict. Many conservatives say that "war is a way of life" and claim that this war protects us from terrorists-well if war is a way of life, so is terrorism, and we have to live with it. Since the beginning of this conflict we've had 0 terrorist attacks? REALLY? We have been slaughtered in Iraq by constant suicide bombings, perhaps you believe that this is a risk we have to take for avoiding domestic attacks, but is killing Americans overseas any different from killing Americans on our homeland. But what are the chances. How many "domestic" attacks have we had during the past 50 years, less than you can count on your right hand. We have always been a secure country and this attack caused us to develop an anxiety disorder over every inch. We have relinquished our dignity, image on the world stage, and integrity so that our own government can tap our phone calls and call it a "patriotic thing to do" I tell you my fellow American, the words freedom and patriotic have lost their touch. They've gone from symbols of undeniable valor and bravery for the causes of our forefathers to the upholding of a partisan political belief that rots our country from the inside. Am I really a patriot for supporting everything the government does, regardless of its moral subjection, or am I patriot for doing, voting and believing in what is right for our country and all our people collectively. We have many issues on which we disagree, and our abilities to express them freely and enthusiastically is the lifeline of this country. Our religious beliefs, upbringing, and experiences cause us to get polarized on issues that any human being would polarize on, to which there are truly no right answers: -pro life vs pro choice -fiscal spending vs fiscal conservatism -taxation vs relief Can we honestly call what has been wasted by our government in the past 8 years conservative? And I realize that the democrats have been in charge for the past two years, but do you expect a mess that took 6+ years to create to be cleaned up in 2? We have been reduced to near nothingness moraly and financialy. Through debate and expression we have been able to move forward to account for such ground breaking advancements in humanity such as the emancipation proclama I apologize for the length of this letter but thank you to everyone that has taken the time to read this-KonstantinO  more

Resolved Question: Tips on a small town protest?

So I would like to stand outside my local Walmart and pass out this information. Along with some other information that tells more about this type of insurance employers can take out on the employees. Any good suggestions as far as creativity. I was just going to go pass them out at the door till ya know something happens like they tell me to leave. I probably will not leave because they have people from other places beg from money before you even get through the door. I do not want money just to pass this along. Friday, November 18, 2005 What Every American Needs to Know Excerpted, with permission, from James Hightower,"Thieves in High Places" The owners of one of America's premiere retail corporations is comprised of five of the ten richest people in the world, all from the same family. Their personal wealth eclipses $100 BILLION dollars. Last year the company's CEO was paid a cool $11.5 million, more than the annual salaries of 765 of his employees combined! The company's profits are over $7 BILLION annually. In these difficult economic times how do they do it? * This company runs ads featuring the United States flag and proclaims "We Buy American". In 2001 they moved their worldwide purchasing headquarters to China and are the largest importer of Chinese goods in the US, purchasing over $10 BILLION of Chinese-made products annually. Products made mostly by women and children working in the labor hell-holes China is famous for. * Their average employee working in the US makes $15,000 a year, $7.22 per hour! * These employees gross under $11,000 a year. * The company brags that 70% of their employees are full time, but fails to disclose that they count anyone working 28 hours a week or more as full time. * There are no health care benefits unless you have worked for the company for two years. * With a turnover rate averaging above 50% per year, only 38% of their 1.3 million employees have health care coverage. -In California alone it's estimated that the taxpayers pay over $20 million annually to subsidize health care benefits for these employees who get none from this behemoth corporation. * According to a report by PBS's "Now" with Bill Moyer, their managers are trained in what government social programs are available for these"employees" to take advantage of so that the company can pass on those costs to you and me. It allows them to not only keep their $7 BILLION in annual profits, but to do so by substituting benefits they refuse to provide with benefits paid for with taxpayer dollars. * This company holds the record for the most suits filed against it by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. A lawyer from "Business Week" (not exactly the bastion for supporting Labor) said, "I have never seen this kind of blatant disregard for the law." They had to pay $750,000.00 in Arizona for blatant discrimination against the disabled! The judge was so incensed that he also order them to run commercials admitting their guilt. * The National Labor Relations Board has issued over 40 formal complaints against the corporation in 25 different states in just the past five years. The NLRB's top lawyer believed that their labor violations, such as Illegal spying on employees, fraudulent record keeping, falsifying time cards to avoid paying overtime, threats, illegal firings for union organizing etc., were so widespread that he was looking into filing a very rare national complaint against the company. (The company contributed $2,159,330.00 to GW Bush and the GOP in 2000 and 2002. The NLRB attorney was replaced when President Bush took office.). * Nearly 1 MILLION women are involved in the largest class-action suit every filed against a corporation. Although women make up over 65% of this corporations work force only 10% of them are managers. The women who have become store managers make $16,400 a year LESS then the men. * The corporation took out nearly 350,000 life insurance policies on their employees. They did not tell the employees and then named the corporation as the beneficiary. They are now being sued by numerous employees, and although the corporation has stopped this practice of purchasing what is known as "Dead Peasant Policy's", a company spokesperson stated, "The company feels it acted properly and legally in doing this." * They force employees to work after ordering them to punch out. In Texas alone this practice of "wage theft" is estimated to have cost employees $30 million per year. Wage theft or "off-the-clock" lawsuits are pending in 25 states. In New Mexico they paid $400,000.00 in one suit and in Colorado they had to pay $50 MILLION to settle one class-action case brought against them. In Oregon a jury found them guilty of locking employees in the building and of forcing unpaid overtime. * With 4,400 stores they practice "predatory pricing." They come into a community and sell their goods at below cost until they drive local businesses under. Once they have cap  more

Resolved Question: What do you think about Obama's proposed economic stimuli plan?

Apparently, were looking at three large cash piles on the table. The first one is what's half of the $700 billon stimulus package that was issued last month, though we all know it was ill-spent. The second one, is another stimulus package that's in the works, which is said to be anywhere between 500 - 700 billion dollars. And lastly, the purpose of the third cash pile is to fix the credit and mortgage crisis. Though, not sure what was the estimate. Anyway, what do you think about Obama's economic recovery plan? Will it work?  more

Resolved Question: What Are You Thankful For? ?

Today I simply want to wish you all a wonderful Thanksgiving Day. As I type those words, I also know that many of you have issues in your life that challenge you daily. You may have an illness you are battling, are in the middle of a break-up, or are licking your economic wounds from the current financial debacle. Whatever it is that may be currently interfering with your ability to feel love, be happy and embrace your life, I ask you to do the best you can to put that all aside on this Thanksgiving Day. I know this simple request will be a tall order for a lot of you. However, even if these are the worst of times, there are always rays of sunlight if you look hard enough. So I say take the opportunity this Thanksgiving Day to reacquaint yourself with what is good in your life. This forced refocusing can create the very wellness inoculation that you need to start seeing more of that sunlight around you and less of that darkness. If you can successfully do this on this Thanksgiving Day, you just might find more to be thankful for than you ever imagined. With that said, let me leave you with some upbeat lyrics from a song made famous in The Wizard of OZ. The song is called “Optimistic Voices,” and I think these selected lyrics provide the perfect soundtrack for Thanksgiving: You’re out of the woods You're out of the dark You're out of the night Step into the sun Step into the light… Happy Thanksgiving everyone!  more

Resolved Question: Can you name four or more myths about the American auto industry?

Here are a few misconceptions, cleared up. You can read Albom’s column at www.freep.com/article/20081123/COL01/811... Detroit Free Press Exposes Six Myths About Domestic Automakers The November 17, 2008, issue of the Detroit Free Press ran an interesting article about six domestic automaker myths that linger in the minds of consumers: “The debate over aid to the Detroit-based automakers is awash with half-truths and misrepresentations that are endlessly repeated by everyone from members of Congress to journalists. Here are six myths about the companies and their vehicles, and the reality in each case. Myth 1: Nobody buys their vehicles. Reality: General Motors, Ford and Chrysler sold 8.5 million vehicles in the United States last year and millions more around the world. GM outsold Toyota by about 1.2 million vehicles in the United States last year and holds a U.S. lead over Toyota of about 650,000 so far this year. Globally, GM in 2007 remained the world’s largest automaker, selling 9,369,524 vehicles worldwide -- about 3,000 more than Toyota. Myth 2: They build unreliable junk. Reality: The independent J.D. Power Initial Quality Study scored Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Ford, GMC, Mercury, Pontiac and Lincoln brands’ overall quality as high or higher than that of Acura, Audi, BMW, Honda, Nissan, Scion, Volkswagen and Volvo. Power rated the Chevrolet Malibu the highest-quality midsize sedan. Both the Malibu and Ford Fusion scored better than the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. Myth 3: They build gas-guzzlers. Reality: All of the Detroit Three build midsize sedans the Environmental Protection Agency rates at 29-33 miles per gallon on the highway. The most fuel-efficient Chevrolet Malibu gets 33 mpg on the highway, 2 mpg better than the best Honda Accord. The most fuel-efficient Chevrolet Cobalt has the same city fuel economy and better highway fuel economy than the most efficient non-hybrid Honda Civic. Myth 4: They already got a $25-billion bailout. Reality: None of that money has been lent out and may not be for more than a year. In addition, it can, by law, be used only to invest in future vehicles and technology, so it has no effect on the shortage of operating cash the companies face because of the economic slowdown that’s killing them now. Myth 5: GM, Ford and Chrysler are idiots for investing in pickups and SUVs. Reality: The domestic companies’ lineup has been truck-heavy, but Toyota, Nissan, Mercedes-Benz and BMW have all spent billions of dollars on pickups and SUVs because trucks are a large and historically profitable part of the auto industry. The most fuel-efficient full-size pickups from GM, Ford and Chrysler all have higher EPA fuel economy ratings than Toyota and Nissan’s full-size pickups. Myth 6: They don’t build hybrids. Reality: The Detroit Three got into the hybrid business late, but Ford and GM each now offers more hybrid models than Honda or Nissan, with several more due to hit the road in early 2009. Resolved Question: Don't we have bigger issues to worry about than Gay Marriage?

I mean, why u think didn't Obama bring up Gay marriage in the Election? People don't wanna hear about that bull. People are losing jobs, People are losing their homes, we are in the biggest economic crisis since the great Depression. And you are worried about Gay marriage? In fact, every time you brought up Gay marriage during the Election. Liberals would use those exact points to change the Subject. And I'm a liberal who voted Obama and don't support Gay marriage. So I'm sick of these Characters like -- Lemon Pie -- Asking these questions about -- Why do people hate gays? Lemon Pie seems like a weird name anyway. I guess Sweet Potato Pie was taken huh? yes, obama said he thought that marriage was between man and a woman after the election, before he said, it should be an state issue, he never brought it up he responded to questions every time sayin it should be up to the state, where were you? During the Election Obama said it should be up to the State. The State of Cali has decided.  more

Resolved Question: What does the Republican Party need to do now?

Regardless of who the Republicans choose as leaders, they will reside deep in the political wilderness until they come up with some ideas as to how to serve 21st Century America. And no, those ideas do not include: 1. Cutting taxes again for the wealthy, in an effort to give us more trickle down, or whatever you are calling it these days. This has worked out for only about oh, say, 1% of Americans. The other 99% is beginning to catch on and, Republicans, heaven help you if they do. 2. A continuing "war on terror". Republican policies have done more harm to this country than Osama could ever have dreamed of doing. It turns out that the truly scary terrorists were the guys in charge of managing American capital. Republicans and their Democratic stooges who bought into your deregulation nonsense turned these wolves loose on the rest of us. Thanks a lot. 3. Hollering constantly about banning abortion. I simply cannot think of a more irrelevant issue when we are looking into the economic black hole in front of us. 4. Hollering about "freedom". We get it already, OK. We all love freedom and are in favor of it. We agree with you that everyone should have it. We do not agree that the effort to reach this Utopia requires that we bankrupt ourselves. You are approaching self-parody with this. 5. The same goes for "patriotism". We'll all wear lapel pins if you promise to begin thinking about problem solving and lay off the platitudes for a while. We are all in favor of patriotism. We just wish big capital had shown more consideration for their country before they lost our financial crown jewels. Maybe you could preach a bit of patriotism to these guys (since none of them have been punished, I presume the leaders of failed mega business have landed on their feet in some other super-bonus jobs). 6 And oh yeah, you're not still in favor of privatizing my social security, are you? So if you leave those things out, what can the party do to get back to its roots and/or to choose winning candidates again?  more
