Resolved Question: What pump to use for an outdoor fountain?

I would like to get a small fountain in the center of my garden, however I do not have an outdoor plug. I also cannot get one because it is a rented flat, and you cannot just run cords out of the window in the center of a city. So, what else can i do? Can i run a fountain off something like a car battery, buried in a sealed box a few meters away? Would a solar fountain work, or is there not enough sunlight this far north (55N), also where do you put the solar panel where it doesn't look ugly? Are there other types of battery powered pumps, and where would you get them from? For any suggestions of where to buy pumps, note that i am in the UK. Thanks more

Voting Question: Is it fair that the government is spending billions of taxpayers money on the car scrapage scheme?

People can't afford cars at the present time, and many forget that a car is a luxury item and a brand new car is a very luxurious item. Many people buying new vehicles probably don't need brand new cars, and shouldn't be scrapping cars that work perfectly well. As a country, should we be supporting an industry that makes cars that, by their definition have a very short shelf life, and are designed to be replaced. A perfect opportunity to impose improved mileage and lifetimes on car manufacturers has been missed. Instead, like the banking industry, and the government itself, we have bailed out a system which couldn't sustain itself in the first place. And why hasn't the government prevented, and indeed actively allowed the destruction of other industries like fishing, year in, year out, till there is nothing left. Taking jobs and money from communities. Strange that an island would destroy it's fishing industry....I know they try and justify spending millions of tax pounds by saying it's to safe guard (car industry) jobs, but why not utilise the car industries skilled workforce to build efficient, renewable energy, long lasting and durable vehicles. And for the country, why not also solar panels, all sizes of wind turbines, wave power generated power units, and other green solutions which people now and future generations will inherit. The countries which head down this route will have a great head start, and be able to produce this technology cheaper and quicker than those that refuse to adapt. To all the motorists who will send those forwarded emails, (especially the ones in shiny new cars...) asking to keep sending on as a petition to the government about rising fuel costs, this is your opportunity to prevent that situation happening again. The government is spending your money to make sure you will be in that situation again, because you need petrol for your 20-25mpg Brand new car. The original model T Ford did !5-21 mpg. That was one hundred years ago. My god, the whole thing makes me sad and angry. more

Resolved Question: Is it possible to connect solar panels to a household outlet?

Can you take solar panels and connect them to a household outlet? This is so that you could plug in devices that would be powered by the solar panel. Btw, I do not mean to actually plug them into the outlet in a house, but if you could buy an outlet from a hardwaree store and use that. What I mean is. Can you take a simple small solar panel that could be used to power a small fan or something, connect many together, use a device to convert DC to AC, and connect the wires to an outlet that you purchase at a hardware store, This could be used to theoretically power devices on the go by plugging an electronic device into this outlet. more

Resolved Question: Home upgrades yes or no?

Hi. I've just bought my first home about 3 months ago. I'm 21 and bought it as a "investment" home and plan to sale it in about 3-5yrs...hopefully. I purchased it for $110,000 as a banked owned home..very lucky... It's 1250sqft 3bed, 2bath and on the gulf with a bay view here in Navarre, FL (Destin, FL Area) . I completely remodeled the house inside and out, Wood/Carpet/Tile Floors, Stainless Steal Appliances, Custom Cabinets, Granite Counters (all), tub/showers. Lights, Paint and so far I only spent about $7,000-$8,000 on the remodeled got everything at wholesale and installed mostly everything myself. Also have (10) 200w Solar Panels on the roof which were gave to me as a gift. Power bill has been on average $25.00 a month + I have a private well so my water bill is mainly my electric bill. I just discovered that I'm going to have to replace my Hot Water Heater so my question is should I spend the $2500.00 that I was quoted for the Tankless Heater? are just replace it with another conventional tank for $800? and save the money? If I go with the tankless should I see a return are extra value on my house?Yes I know this area is highly populated with military ;-). I plan to sale not rent I don't really want to do the landlord thing or let a company handle that for me. Rather Sale and cash out. Renting the house and buying another would require me to keep both homes maintained and that could be alot of work. more

Resolved Question: You know what I don't understand about politicians and environmentalist?

They keep saying Earth, and its life is on a path of destruction, via Global Warming, and Overpopulation. They claim to care so much for the planet, and love to curse at us for not buying Solar panels, they even say we have to much people on Earth and that we need to stop reproducing. My questions is this, "if they care so much for this planet, why aren't they the first ones to line up at the jumping boot over "Yellowstone's Super volcano?" wouldn't that be a start in cutting down large populations, and extra pollutions? I mean... it was their idea to help the planet after all, if I cared about something a lot, I would gladly sacrifice my self for it. Just a thought.Lava, is a quick death, though i'm not sure if it's painless.I never said they were talking about "mass murder" I'm saying they should help the population by jumping in a volcano... that's Suicide not murder. What's a better way to control the population? They love the Earth right? so why not? more

Resolved Question: Homemade Solar Panel Question - What Ebook to buy?

I recently asked a question as seen below and only recieved 2 answers but both were stating that most homemade solar panel guides or build home solar panels are mostly scams..well I have purchased 2 ebooks so far and they are OK and it seems like it is possible, but the ones I purchased are not clear enough...However, I see so many places and forums where people are succeeding at building their own home solar power...If anyone has found any ebooks or resources that can help me build one, I would appreciate it...Thanks for the input...below was my previous question..... "I just purchased a new home and am wanting to go green a little. I want to attempt and make my own homemade solar panels. I have found so many Do It Yourself solar panel guides and reviews I don't know which one to use or trust. Does anyone have any recommendations that are tried and true that work and with very detailed on how to make your DIY solar panel? Thanks for the help."... more

Resolved Question: 70w Solar Panel wattage calculation?

I recently bought a 70 watt solar panel with specifications as 17.5 volts / 4 amps. The thing is that I am unable to get more than 2.7 amps per hour, even when the sky is clean. I once got 3.0 and 3.3 amps. Is there something to do with the solar panel. I keep it to he south with approx 25 degrees inclication as per my country (India). I also see a small crack in one of the chips. But it seems to be parallely connected to the circut so I am not sure its because of that. Is it true that 4 amps would only be possible in very perfect / or lab conditions. Some more information would be helpful. Thank you.Normally the volatge from the panel is 17 to 18 volts at which I get 3 amp max at 12 / 1 noon. Amps through the day are 8am 1.5 / 9am 1.8 / 10 am 2.0 / 11am 2.5 / 12pm 3.0 (max) / 01pm 2.7 / 02pm2.5 / 03pm 2.0 / 04pm 1.5 / 05pm 1.0 and below. I use a solar 5a solar charge controller to charge a 42ah SMF battery and my load is my 65w laptop that consumes 65w while charging and normally i guess about 25-30 watts. more

Resolved Question: How to investing in so-called green energy?

There's a contest at my work to be green. One gets points for reducing one's carbon footprint. One of the things I can do to get points is switch to "green" energy producers. The way it works is you pay a little extra money in your electric bill and the green program promises to produce the amount of electricity you used and put it on the grid. The reason why the cost is higher is that the infrastructure of green energy is still being built, so eventually the cost of green electricity should be competitve. I'm hesitant because it just sounds like a donation that isn't tax deductable or an investment that isn't going to have any returns. It's not as if the people putting these windmills up are non-profit, they are making money, so if I put the front money, I should be a shareholder in their company. I would like to know if there is a way to invest in green energy producers the way you would invest in any new business venture, because at least I would that way get a little return on my investment of helping to put up the wind mills or solar panels instead of just paying more to put them up so I can have the pleasure of buying green electricity from the people who I gave money to start their business. more

Resolved Question: how to make solar panels or windmills at home cheap?

i have been looking for how to make solar panels at home for cheap. i only found expensive ebooks that tell you what to buy and how to put it together. is there anything free someone posted somewhere on what to buy and how to put together solar panels cheap? if not then windmills work too, so long as i dont have to buy an ebook or anything like that. maybe someone posted how to make one in a blog somewhere. if you know where, please tell me the link. thanks! more

Resolved Question: Why don't more businesses and non-profit organizations use solar panels?

I was watching Extreme Makeover Home Edition and they installed solar panels in one home and said it would reduce their energy bill to only 7$ a month. I know there must be some businesses using them, but none that I know of in my area (Eastern NC). So why don't more use them? They would get a huge tax deduction as well as save on electricity bills. Is it just not profitable enough? I mean does it just cost to much to buy and install to really think about the long term benefits or what? more

Resolved Question: Should We Buy Older Home?

My wife and I are thinking about buying a 44-year-old home. The home appears to have been well taken care of but due to the nature of the soil in Mississippi, the house has had foundation repair by a stellar local company with a lifetime transferrable warranty. Today when I went to tour the home, I was informed that some termites had been found, exterminated, and the damaged was being repaired as I was there. The seller is throwing in some nice extras with the home such a solar panels and a surveillance system. Should these past problems throw up a red flag? more

Resolved Question: Can you help me with my eco-friendly automotive theory?

Please humor my idea for a moment. I had this idea for an eco-friendly car. Its basically the Ford Fusion only with solar panels covering the car with the fusion generator that is already currently built into it (instead of using gas as a kickstart). The vehicle would gain solar power while the vehicle is parked which juices the battery. As you drive down the road, both axles turn, the gears turn for the generator (fusion) storing energy so the car maintains a solid energy source that can be manually toggled between solar and fusion power usage. I'm not an engineer, but I think at least some part of my idea could be used in creating an eco-friendly, sleek and very cool looking car (5 speed manual, 2 door, seats 4 adults, reflective silver or scratch resistant mirror-like material with black racing strips, the solar panels are built into the racing strips so that it blends into the design, limited power/automatic features so that the battery is not drained too much, vehicle uses 6 car batteries and 2 generators ). A second option is that we could simply buy the same alternative energy hybrid or fuel cell vehicles that are used currently in the UK. Something to think about: "The atomic automobile" http://www.damninteresting.com/?p=656 "Vegetable oil car" http://video.about.com/alternativefuels/Car-Runs-on-Vegetable-Oil.htm "2010 Toyota Prius Hybrid" http://alternativefuels.about.com/od/2010hybridreviews/gr/2010ToyotaPrius.htm "The Hybrid Experience" http://videos.howstuffworks.com/webridestv/5539-the-hybrid-experience-video.htm "Invention Nation: Super Hybrid" (motorcycle style car? 100 mpg) http://videos.howstuffworks.com/science-channel/5067-invention-nation-super-hybrid-video.htm "Fuel Celled Vehicles" http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/fuelcell.shtmlWow, 3 days and no answer. I guess no one reads this section and no one cares about using alternative energy for their vehicles. God help us all when we run out of oil. I guess we will just kill each other while fighting over gas and charge $100 per gallon of gas 20 years from now, so be it. more

Resolved Question: Anyone familiar with multimeters/mini ammeters?

I have a project for chemistry whre I need to present how photovoltics works (solor panels). I am using this link http://scitoys.com/scitoys/scitoys/echem/echem2.html#solarcell to build it. (S)He says I need copper flashing (check), two alligator clips (check), an electric stove (check), and sand paper (check). Everything except the electric stove, and the simple things I can already have or can et easily, I am getting form drillspot.com. There is one last thing I require and it is a micrometer/multimeter. I am trying to build a simple solar cell. For this experiment I am doing I need to test out my experiment and do a report on it. This is where you come in. Based on what is in the instructions of the website, I need you to try and find a meter from drillspot.com to measure how many microamps when the sun shines on my solar cell, and when I am blocking the sun from my solar cell. I do not want to end up buying the wrong measuring meter and having my project lead to incorrect information. I do realize this type of solar cell only measures small amounts of energy, which is why I do not want to end up buying the wrong measuring device that measures larger units. Try to find it from drillspot.com so I can send in my order at the same time to recieve it asap. If I have any information incorrect, please correct my mistakes. If there is an even simplier way, or cheaper way to build this solar cell, please inform me. more

Resolved Question: What do you think of my idea for a new government?

A lot of the government will get its support from the jail system. My idea is for slavery to only be legal for those who defy the laws in the worst ways. Recycling will be enforced and the people who will manage the recycling processes will be the prisoners. The by products from the recycling will be contained and research will be done to find out how it can be recycled as well. The materials to be recycled will go towards help paying the taxes of the citizens under the government. The funds will go for waste management research rather than all of this senseless replay of unneeded warfare and weapons development. There will be super fertilizer made for to sell the farmers in giant heaps of land. Food, paper and other things that can help create a good fertilizer over time will be there. The plastics, metals and such once processed will be sold to companies. There will indeed be some taxes to pay and the same sort of health care that Canada has, so will this new government. This new government will have the people vote for each law individually by the means of the internet and networking. Pot will be legal, but drugs who cause more deaths will not be. Alcohol distributed must be purchased with a card similar to a credit card and only so much can each individual have. The legal drinking age will be 16, but moderation will be enforced. If you drop out of school, you will be a fugitive, unless you return before 2 years has passed. Secrets will not be kept from the civilians like in this government. All vehicles must be environmentally friendly. There will be "pot houses" like pubs for pot, you go here to mellow out you can only come here once every other day and the same card for alcohol must be used to keep track as well. Only someone who has pot for medicinal purposes can keep it at their home. Cigarettes will be outlawed unless all natural. Guns will be banned, if you have any real balls, use a damned sword! Bows, arrows and high powered slingshots will be used in hunting. Satanism will be outlawed, all other religions are alright with me. Christmas and Easter will be celebrated on another day, The day it was originally celebrated will now be called gift day and The spring gathering. The actual Christmas and Easter did not happen when they are claimed to have happened, it's a cover up and it disgusts me and many others. The power companies will be clean power providers, every house will have solar panel roofs and be hooked up in a group. Old people who are on life support will be let go from life support if they are suffering too much and papers must be filled out at a certain age to say if they would want otherwise. Population will be controlled. Marriage before reproduction will be enforced. If there is proof that an affair is going on between two people, the cheater or cheaters can be given a lawsuit and money will be taken from them, half given to the victim and the other half to the government. Rather than a president, there will be a king and queen, within the family the morals and values will be kept alive, if not, a revolt is inevitable, and so be it! There will be no rent for properties to be paid. The roads and such will be made from highly durable recycled material that can be repaired very easily with steam roller type machines. The law enforcements will be groups of bounty hunters who are not meant to kill their prey, but to hunt and capture, even if that means cutting their arms and legs off if they try to resist. Lie detectors will be present at all courts and a drug will be developed to counter those who have to ability to fool the lie detector. If you are going to court for speeding or something car related you can drive there if you have to and will be permitted a sort of special 2 day license for the trip, although, you must apply for it. This government will be neutral any only have trade with other counties and nothing else! The rights of free speech will be kept. Gambling will be legal but many limits will be set. Prostitution will be outlawed. And there will be a limit to how many children each person can have before they are caught into a lottery for getting tubes tied or a vasectomy. There will be a limit to how much food can be bought based on pets and household. Vicious dogs will not be put to death, they will be put to work within the prison for extra guards. The payment for jobs will be to have a home to live and citizenship. A type of bonus credit will come to those who find a way to start a business. This will go into circulation and slowly change things a bit. The bonus credits can buy things that are desired rather than needed. Also this type of credit can be gotten other ways as well such as winning it as a prize or getting it in a trade. There will be three types of ways to get things, by limiting cards, bonus credits and trade. This does away with flaws based on poor moderation, makes it nearly impossible to be greedy and get everything easily at the same time. ThiThis was so long that they chose to cut my writing short. People's desire for a good conflict can be met through special events and the job choice as a bounty hunter. Murder is for losers, torture is for kings! You don't seem to understand my views on population control. Yes I know what kills, and something must kill to keep the population down to a minimum. Sure, pot kills, but just imagine, a possible murderer on pot, too mellow to kill. If someone or something is to kill, I'd prefer it to not be man directly to do the job. As I said, I was cut off. The rest of the details were not put on.As for lie detecting, there is always a chemical composition to be discovered and I do believe that there is one that can better a lie detector test, it's just not yet been discovered. As for the things relating to more crime, I have that handled. In order to appreciate the good in life, you need some bad in life to look at and compare. Without appreciation for what is good in life, you can not find happiness. As for the market, there would be stores from another country as well as family owned and government ones. As for having the land to make a government for, that is still in the early stages of how and where. If you have unmanned land, people will come.Even if many of the rules are considerably unfair to some standards, there are still countries who have it worse and people would come right over in a heart beat. As for extra funds, and extra prisoners, let the other countries send the overflow of their prisoners. more

Resolved Question: Can excessive heat in a room cause crumbling and cracking in drywall?

A house we have made an offer to buy has turned up something odd on the inspection. The house is a beautiful passive solar building, architect designed and built about 20 years ago. The ceilings in the living room are quite high (probably 15 feet), and there is an area close to where the pine panelled ceiling meets the walls, directly above the woodstove that looked to us (and our house inspector) like water had leaked in either through the chimney or roof. The chimney is inside the wall and drywalled over, not masonry. When questioned, the sellers have told us that it is in fact not water damage at all, but crumbling caused by excessive heat coming in the south-facing windows (there is a working ceiling fan, but it does seem quite warm in the room). They said that about 2 years sgo, it had been repaired by a contractor, but was never sanded down or painted (because it is so high up, it is really hard to reach). This sounds a bit odd to us - does anyone know if it is possible for drywall to crack and crumble in heat? We live in a fairly cold climate, and don't know that much about heat issues like that, or about problems specific to passive solar design. We love the house, but are a bit worried about something that might indicate long-term water leaking. Any advice or opinions would be appreciated. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: need some advice/opinions?

i am very strong on recycling and renewable energy. I hate the thought of throwing "rubbish" away without doing something to help the environment. For example at work i try and encourage staff to recycle receipts. But very few people bother, how can i encourage them even more to become more wise about material wastage? I also operate a small scale worm farm and compost bin, but i feel my efforts compared to the big problem are futile. I feel bad that no one else seems to care... In addition, i am 18 and live with mum n dad, and am looking at greywater systems/solar panels. We just had rennovations, if i propose we buy a solar power system will that effect the existing electrical work? finally i was actually looking for someone to help me design a website promoting renewable energy and recyling in general. all help appreciated msn: robakareidy_17@hotmail.com more

Hi There, i am building like a little hut outside for my tortoise and am wanting to run two lights roughly about 100 - 150 watts inside this little hutch. my plans where to buy a solar panel and a 12v battery to hook up to the solar panel. I want to know how long it will take for the battery to charge of the solar panel btw there going to be x5 3ma panel's. and i also want to know how long the battery will last with roughly 150 watts lights on it? Resolved Question: What is your opinion on using a photovoltaic system to offset/eliminate the cost of buying grid power?

I'm taking a poll on the attitudes of consumers towards alternative energy, namely solar energy. A photovoltaic system converts sunlight into electricity. At current, the efficiency rating of most commercially available panels is somewhere between 15-19% depending on the type you buy. An efficiency rating is a measurement of how much of the available sunlight a pv panel is able to convert into electricity. (NASA uses panels with a 40% efficiency rating) more

Resolved Question: Would you buy a "green kit"? Includes....?

I am going to ask this in a couple places...... I have a marketing assignment and thought of a "green kit". You can pick from reusable shopping bags, the water regulators for toilets (etc), incandescent light bulbs, maybe some seeds for planting trees/flowers, baby and cleaning products, info and set up (if interested) for setting up solar power paneling, maybe some recycling bins that break down so you can store them easily (we have to take our recycling to a bin at the end of town....no pick up), notebooks/school supplies made from recycled material...that's all I thought of so far. 1) would you buy it? 2) would you add anything to the list that you would want to buy? Thanks all...... more

Resolved Question: What should I give to my husband?

It's his 30th birthday. I'm already taking him to the Museum of Air and Space in D.C. He's obsessed with magnets, solar panels, science and universe stuff. I already plan to buy a biography of Einstein or a Brian Green book. Any other ideas? I'll choose best answer early tomorrow. I live in NYC, if anyone knows a store when I can get such.My husband has a lot of Stephen Hawking books already..lol.. thanks =) more
