Voting Question: Is handmade 25 weight paper thick enough for charcoal, watercolor, pastel, pencil, pen...etc art?
I'm looking to do a bit of drawing and possibly small paintings was wondering what paper is best for mostly sketches and charcoal but occasionally watercolors or paint. The paper I am looking at is handmade standard 25 weight paper, about the same thickness you find in most copy machine paper. It is 100 percent recycled materials. The paper is 100 percent cotton rag, waste cotton from a t-shirt factory. Fabric scraps are shredded with a cutting machine and mixed with water until the slurry mixture resembles potato soup in appearance and texture. The slurry is ladled onto a screen with a framed edge so that the paper/water slurry will not spill. The water sinks through the screen mesh, leaving only a cotton sheet. This is hung up to dry and cut to size. Some papers have other fibers pressed in, such as flowers, straw or herbs. The imprint of the screen is clearly visible on the paper. That paper seems sturdy to me with an old-fashioned feel. moreResolved Question: Can You Sort Out The Iambic Pentamter To This ?

I'm a city planner and we're always printing out large-format drawings, marking them up, and then throwing them away. Problem is, we just throw them in the garbage. Before I got to the company, they had a dumpster outside of the building that was to be used for paper and cardboard. This didn't end up working out because after hours people would bring regular garbage and throw it in there with the recyclables. The recycling service said that once it's all mixed up like that, then all of it has to go to the regular garbage. Bummer. Since much of it wasn't getting recycled, my company was no longer able to justify paying for the recycling services. I'm trying to encourage the VP to implement it again, but I'd like to have some good information so we have a good place to start. Can anybody offer any advice or point me in the direction of where I can find examples of some ways corporations can benefit from implementing recycling programs? We waste a LOT of paper daily! Thanks in advance. moreResolved Question: How do you recycle paper?

Hi There... just hoping someone could give me a bit of advice... I just adopted two male baby rats two days ago and am very happy to have them. I am an experienced pet owner, as I have owned many different types of animals, but have never owned rats. Since this is my first time owning this animal, I just want to make sure I’m doing everything correctly and I would like to be informed so I can be a good owner. (I might be being a little too cautious – I want everything to go perfectly with them as they seem to be the perfect pet) They are about 6 weeks old, was told they are brothers (from the same liter) and also was told they were vet checked before being sold, they seem to be pretty tame/used to being handled. Originally I purchased a very large, three-story cage and was told that it was made for rats. We bought our little ratties, set up the cage, and load and behold they could squeeze right out between the bars with no effort. So, we had to bring the cage back, and they had nothing really suited for rats in stock, so we had to order a proper cage. Currently they are in a cage that is roughly 25"L x 18"W x 16"H. I feel bad about keeping them in a cage that size (I feel like its too small, but I suppose they are babies and its okay for a little while.) I had every intention on getting them a great big spacious cage that they can have lots of fun in, but for the time being that's all I have. The new cage should be arriving in about 7 days, so they'll get to be in their mansion soon. The new cage is 30"L x 18" W x 30"H and is called: Super Pet® Deluxe My First Home Cage for Exotics. I have them in Aspen wood chips and that CareFresh stuff in their litter box. I am feeding them Lab Blocks, and am mixing in a bit of 'Rat Food Mix' just to get them eating. Also, I bought 'Yogurt Drops' and have been using those as treats to get them to like me! They have places to hide; some chew toys, some tissue paper to shred and nest in, as well as a couple old (clean) socks with some holes in it. They are still a little bit timid, since I have only had them for a couple days but come to the cage door when I open it. They still won't climb into my hand, but have no problem being picked up. They don’t really like to sit still when they are out of the cage, I wish they would get comfortable with me so they can just relax on my lap and let me pet them. They like to snuggle in the hood of my sweater together and are content being in there for a couple hours at a time. They both have been drinking water just fine and have been eating, or at least taking it from the bowl, bury it and then go foraging for it later (even though they seem to be picky eaters already!)The cage is in my bedroom, therefore away from any loud noises and there’s isn’t a lot of foot traffic. I understand that rats are nocturnal, but my ratties seem to be sleeping a lot; most of the day and half of the night. I hope this is normal; perhaps their schedule is just a little mixed up from coming from a pet store where there's activity during the day and nothing going on at night. I suppose they are just re-adjusting their sleeping patterns. A couple things I have noticed that I am a little worried/concerned about are 1) they seem to tussle/fight quite a bit, but only when they are in their cage. 2) they take turns mounting each other, which I understand can just be their way of figuring out who is the dominant but I am concerned that these are signs that they will only continue to get aggressive towards each other and maybe even have to be separated when they are older. 3) I have noticed that they often don’t sleep together, which is unusual because they just came from a cage together at the pet store where they slept together and didn’t fight. And lastly, 4) one of them seems to be sneezing like crazy and seems to have a bit of red around his nose. I understand that rat's saliva is red/pinkish so after they groom themselves it could look like they are bleeding, but this is only around his nose. The other rat looks just fine and isn't sneezing at all (mind you, he is scratching like crazy sometimes). I'm just wondering if there could be something wrong with my little rattie already. Is sneezing a sign of something bad? Or is he maybe just adjusting to the new environment/smells? Everything else seems to be okay with him; no wheezing or laboured breathing... UPDATE: Harvey's nose isn't red anymore, or atleast doesn't seem to be. Also, he doesn't seem to be sneezing *AS* much. He is still sneezing every few minutes, and then will stop for a while... but it's better than before. Yesterday he would sneeze like 5 or 6 times in a row, one right after the other. I changed their cage, and I'm now using only Care Fresh in their cage, no more woodchips at all. I thought I was using what the experts recommend best for ratties (Aspen), but I decided to change the cage and use only the recycled paper stuff. I don't know if it matters or not, but Harvey's brother Skunk seems to be a lot larger than Harvey. Is this normal? Even his tail is longer than Harvey's. Also, is there a good way to get them used to being held and petted? When I take them out of their cage they just crawl up to my shoulder and into my hood or at the back of my neck and rest there. I wish they would let me pet them more and hang out in my lap or hand. Any suggestions/advice? moreResolved Question: Can I Recycle Egg Cartons?

So, i've decided to start recycling. At the moment, i'm going to mainly work on recycling paper. Please Help! moreResolved Question: Is the media anti Christian? Why or why not?
By Father John Flynn ROME, MAY 28, 2007 (Zenit.org).- Sexual abuses mixed with allegations of Church abuse make for an explosive media formula, as Italians can testify. The state-owned television broadcaster, RAI, sparked a debate after it announced that it wanted to buy the rights to transmit a BBC program, "Sex Crimes and the Vatican." Last Tuesday the RAI announced its purchase of the documentary. But owing to strong protests over the program's credibility, RAI director general Claudio Cappon stipulated that the talk show that will host the transmission, "Year Zero," also has to give time to Church representatives for a rebuttal. Along with presenting an account of child abuse, the BBC program makes accusations concerning a supposed Vatican-ordered cover-up. The documentary also accuses Benedict XVI of complicity in covering up sexual abuses in the past when he was a cardinal. The tendentious nature of the BBC program was exposed in a declaration made last year by English Archbishop Vincent Nichols, who is chair of the Catholic Office for the Protection of Children and Vulnerable Adults. In an Oct. 2 press release, which came the day after the BBC broadcast the program in England, the archbishop acknowledged the distressing fact of child abuse. He clarified, however, that the part of the program that attacks the Vatican and the Pope "is false and entirely misleading." The prelate said it was false because the BBC program misrepresents two Vatican documents. The program refers to a 1962 document, "Crimen Sollicitationis," which Archbishop Nichols explained, was not directly concerned with child abuse, but with the misuse of the confessional. A second document, "Ad Exequendam," dated 2001, does not, he argued, hinder investigation of child abuse, but is rather "a measure of the seriousness with which the Vatican views these offenses." BBC bias This isn't the first time BBC programs have taken on the Catholic Church. After strong criticism the BBC eventually decided not to transmit its 2004 cartoon series, "Popetown." The cartoon ridiculed Pope John Paul II and the Church. The cartoon resurfaced last year in Germany, where MTV bought the rights with a view to transmitting it just before Good Friday, reported Deutsche Welle on April 12, 2006. Protests failed to block the program, with MTV deciding to broadcast the entire 10-part cartoon, after a test transmission of the first part, reported Reuters on May 9, 2006. The BBC's attitude toward religion was examined by the English newspaper Daily Mail in an article published Oct. 23. Following what was termed an "impartiality" summit convened by BBC Chairman Michael Grade, the paper cited "senior figures" as admitting that the broadcasting corporation was guilty of an anti-Christian bias. Moreover, the Daily Mail reported, during the meeting, BBC executives admitted they would happily broadcast the image of a Bible being thrown away -- but would not do the same for the Koran. Attacking Mary The BBC is not alone in its hostility to religion and the Catholic Church. Another recycled show, this time an American cartoon, "South Park," recently came under fire in New Zealand. A May 23 press release by the New Zealand group Family Life International detailed a complaint made by Catholic bishops about an episode insulting the Virgin Mary, broadcast last year. The bishops presented evidence in an appeal against the decision last year by the country's Broadcasting Standards Authority, which refused to uphold their complaint about the insult to Mary, along with complaints about other episodes. A lawyer for the bishops, Richard Laurenson, told the High Court in Wellington on Wednesday that the program breached the broadcaster's obligation to maintain good taste, decency and fairness. A decision has been reserved in the case. Another recent case comes from Canada, where a Canadian Broadcasting Corporation pilot program that portrays altar boys as drug addicts and the communion host as snack food has sparked protests, reported the Ottawa Citizen newspaper on May 16. The program, "The Altar Boy Gang," was denounced by the Catholic Civil Rights League. "With this program, the CBC has moved into the area of blasphemy of sacred rituals," the organization declared. It also accused the CBC of double standards, noting that the insults toward the Catholic Church came after it hired a Muslim consultant last year to ensure that Islamic practices were respected in the program "Little Mosque on the Prairie." Earlier this year, it was a recycled Italian export that took on the Church, this time in the United States. The University of Minnesota decided to perform a play, "The Pope and the Witch," by Italian author Dario Fo. A Feb. 22 article in the Catholic Spirit, the diocesan newspaper of the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis, reported that Minnesota's bishops and several Catholic organizations objected to the play. The article explained that the play, among other matters, depicts a "delusional, unnamed pontiff." It also depicts the Vatican as being involved in the drug trade, and finishes with the Pope's assassination. An editorial in the same issue of the Catholic Spirit argued that allowing the performance of such a work "pollutes the atmosphere of mutual respect and that promotes the kind of prejudice and intolerance the university says it opposes." Infested The increasing number of programs hostile to Christianity was commented on by Bishop Arthur Roche of Leeds, England, in his pastoral letter for the New Year. In his text, dated Dec. 31, Bishop Roche decried the spreading abuse of Jesus' name in television shows. "It was if my television set had been infested with anti-Christian and deeply disrespectful and derogatory sentiments," he declared, speaking of his experience in turning on the television recently and switching from channel to channel. "There is an ease and a carelessness today in which it is possible, without any resistance, to ridicule Jesus, his Church and his followers," noted Bishop Roche. He then went on to urge believers not to become infected by this tendency and to respect the name of Jesus in everyday conversations. Hostility toward religion was also one of the topics that Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor addressed during a March 28 lecture, at Westminster Cathedral Hall in London. The archbishop of Westminster declared that he feared contemporary society is increasingly marked by "secular dogmatism or cynicism" toward Christians. He stated: "So when Christians stand by their beliefs, they are intolerant dogmatists. When they sin, they are hypocrites. When they take the side of the poor, they are soft-headed liberals. When they seek to defend the family, they are right-wing reactionaries." Secularist intolerance The lecture took place in the context of a fierce debate over government legislation which imposed on Catholic adoption agencies the obligation to hand children over for adoption to same-sex couples. Cardinal Murphy-O'Connor argued that it was no accident that the state's increasing anti-religious tendency takes place at a time of a "new secularist intolerance of religion," which increasingly marks society. The question of how the media treat religion was dealt with by the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, in its 2000 document "Ethics in Communications." The council acknowledged the many positive contributions of the media to everyday life, and also how people benefit through the transmission of religious news and ideas. Nevertheless, the ethics document also noted how sometimes religion unfairly suffers at the hand of the media due to incomprehension or even contempt. Often, religious fads are lauded, while legitimate religious groups are treated with hostility, the council explained in No. 18 of the document. The council called for a greater application of ethical principles in the world of communications. "Communication must always be truthful, since truth is essential to individual liberty and to authentic community among persons," the document exhorted (No. 20). A truthfulness sometimes sorely lacking in some media reports on religion. Please read the above article and then answer the question as to whether you think the media is anti-Christian. I guess the joke's on me... I thought one could have an intelligent discussion on Yahoo! Answers. Best answer is going to go to someone who actually answers the question and gives a reasoned argument, whether I agree or not. Not someone who uses insults or sarcasm. moreResolved Question: If I separate my trash, will it be recycled, or is there no such thing in Egypt?
I'm trying to go green right now (as green as you can go in Egypt which is not very much I'm afraid). So I was wondering since there are no recycle bins anywhere, if I separate my trash at home will it simply get mixed up again in the dumpster or will it be recycled? The only place I've seen recyle bins is in the AUC where they encourage you to recycle paper only. Other than that I'm clueless. I know that garbage collectors go through the trash to salvage whatever they can, but I'm asking about real recycling. moreResolved Question: I recycle everything in my life that can be recycled. Does it really get recycled? Where does it go?
I do 'my part.' I feel less guilty when I put most of my garbage in the recycling bin...all papers, plastics, glass, etc. I try to reuse my glass containers to store my 'bulk item' foods in. But, where does the recycling go? I was told it might not really get recycled...it might actually get thrown away? Who sorts it? Who buys it? Who uses it? When too much stuff is mixed in the recycling, like garbage that some people throw in, does it really get sorted? Just wondering? I'm hungry and I don't feel like going to the store and all I have is rice (Uncle Ben's) and apple sauce (Mott's). Can I mix them together? Will it taste good? Will it make me sick??? I don't want to get sick because I just had strep throat and I am still on antibiotics and I do not want to miss any more work, my boss is mad enough at me as it is! Yesterday I accidently "recycled" a whole bunch (I mean a LOT) of brand new printer paper because she said to "put paper in this bin" and so I thought well here's a bunch of paper I guess it goes here but it was brand new still in the package printer paper (in orange and white wrap, do you know that kind that I mean?) and I opened up the boxes of printer paper and put it all in the bin and then the recycle people came by and recycled it. Boy was my boss mad when she needed some paper and asked me where it all was and all I could say was sorry I didn't know! So you can see why I might be afraid to mix apple sauce with rice. Please help. moreResolved Question: How to recycle white office paper?
I am researching and trying to start a recycling program in my office. I see you should separate paper in two bins (white office paper and mixed low grade paper). If you have color letterhead on office paper does it still go in white bin? One site said if the paper is not blank it has to go in mixed bin? This does not seem right? moreResolved Question: Council recycling.?
Not long ago I used to put my old newspapers, green bottles, brown bottles, clear bottles, plastic bottles and empty cans all in separate containers at the local Tesco store. Now the council collects them. They all go in the green wheelie bin and the lot are loaded unsorted into a dustbin lorry. It must have broken glass mixed with tins, papers etc. How the hell do they sort this lot, it must cost more than the recycled stuff is worth. Or does it save the council money? Charl 203 I checked the council leaflet and phoned them ALL this stuff in THIS AREA goes in the green wheelie bin. moreResolved Question: Is there a way to make homemade paper without screens?
I am trying to make paper with a group of elementary students. We have very few recourses, I'm trying to find a way to make paper without screens or anything other than the very basic ingredients (water and paper and something to mix it in). It's not a big deal if it's not great paper.... I just want to get the idea of recycled paper across. Is it possible to do this or should I try to get more supplies from somewhere? Thanks! moreResolved Question: How can I treat my rat's dry skin and sores?
My male rat has had dandruff, and while I have not noticed him scratching himself, he has little sores on his neck and shoulders. I thought it was due to the dry Maine winter air, but last night he curled up and let me scratch him all over for a long time (and he is usually not cuddly - he was a rescue and is still getting used to nice people). We use recycled paper fluffy-stuff bedding - I can't recall the name of it. He has a well-balanced diet with fresh fruits and veg, and the standard mixes. What can I do to make him comfortable? What might be causing this? moreResolved Question: Can I mix bonfire ash into my garden?
I bought a house this summer and we have been doing a lot of work. Consequently we have just had a small bonfire and burnt most of the unwanted wood (we recycled anything of any use). I heard that ash is good for the soil but the links on this site talk about wood ash from a stove, this will have bits of plaster, wallpaper, the odd role plug and a few other inpurities in it as well as paper and leaves. Can this be used in the same was as stove ash? Can it be mixed in? put in the composter or placed around plants? Or shall I just use it to fill the void under the steps we are building? Thanks moreResolved Question: Recycled Paper?
