Open Question: which is a suitable fuel as the source of energy?
i need help on choosing the best fuel as the source of energy. either:
electricity: no pollution, maintenance cost is low, use directly from the power resource.
propane: emissions of air-toxic is very low, spark plugs of an engine last longer, engines last longer.
methanol: provide hydrogen to power hydrogen to power fuel cell vehicles, alternative fuel for conventional engines, eliminates smog
ive been asked to do a english and science and technology report. and i haveee NO friggen idea how to start this one. help please if you could. thanks! <3

moreResolved Question: Would this work better in getting new energy sources to the market?
Create pain in the pocket books of consumers and I mean all consumers, no exceptions. For proof that this works look at 1973 and 2008. When consumers start feeling pain in their pocketbooks especially those who cannot afford it, they start looking for alternatives. When they start looking they start creating markets and opportunities for someone to fill those markets.
moreVoting Question: I am a Liberal and I think I disagree with Obama's cap and trade tax?
I disagree that a new tax should be burdened on businesses for a problem (global warming) that we are not all fully convinced about. (Consequences and the evidence still remains disputed)
If anything, I think he shouldn't implement this tax at least till we have enough alternative renewable sources of energy, at which point cap and trade would only be an encouragement for businesses to switch to cleaner energy.'Incentive to switch' but without any alternatives to switch to?'Matter of fact, foreign oil companies are buying up ethanol producers that are having a hard time right now and getting ready to turn them around.'
Ah... I see... Incentive for Energy companies, promotes more research & attention into alternative energy. And gives companies an awareness of how they waste energy.
I'm still not sure if this is enough to convince me a new tax is the best idea however...
moreResolved Question: Why do people think geography is useless information?
Last night one of my (now former) contacts articulated she thought it was useless information. As a geography major, it's beyond me how so many people are uninformed about it. Our ignorance is what cost us the Vietnam war and why Hurricane Katrina did extensive damage. Nobody realized we would be in the fight for our lives because they were unaware, we'd be fighting combat in the jungle. Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville didn't build New Orleans on the north side of Lake Pontchartrain like he should have because he didn't know it was below sea level. The Army Corps of Engineers never figured damming up the floodpath into the Atchafalaya would cause more output from the Mississippi increasing the odds of flooding. Lack of geographical knowledge is why New Orleans, Tokyo, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Mexico City are in the worst possible locations to build a city. This explains why we brought kudzu into the United States without considering the drawback. We realized too late that the Japanese beetles are what help keep it in check. Our geographical knowledge is how we are able to ascertain which sources of alternative energy are ubiquitous in a certain region. Geography is what helped us win World War II. Had it not been for the Gulf Stream, we wouldn't have arrived at Normandy so soon to help the allies defeat the Nazis. So do you still think geography is useless information? In fact, I believe this is what cost John McCain the election. Because Sarah Palin showed her lack of knowledge claiming Africa was a country and Afghanistan was a neighbor to the U.S., everyone caught on. Because she claimed she could see Russia from her house in Wasilla, is why everyone began to second guess McCain's credentials. She wasn't fooling me because this is my livelihood. It's my job to know these things. Geography is how we know which soil is fertile and where to plant our crops so our children don't starve.
moreVoting Question: would you support your rep. for re-election if they caved on the reason you sent them to Congress? I had ....?
... to burn the midnight oil tonight after recieving an email on why one of my states delegation voted for the Cap & Tax Energy bill and learning that the man I campaigned for had caved and voted with the liberals. here are the letters I wrote to both Repr. Dave Reichert and Adam Smith respectively.
Representative Reichert,
I voted for you in the last election. In fact I campaigned for you. I put a bumper sticker on my car for you. I spent several afternoons and evenings at the Republican call center in Puyallup contacting voters to get you elected instead of Darcy Burner.
I did this because I expected you would be a conservative when it really matters. So when I found out a few minutes ago that you voted with the Liberals on this Energy bill which is based on Pseudo Science and will probably outsource over 2 Million jobs from America to China, Mexico, & India, I was to say the least severely dissappointed in you. You let me down, you let our country down. What is even worse is that you and only 7 other republicans could have voted the other way and stopped this nonsense bill. The stimulus package was bad enough. But I think this is worse.
They added an ammendment at 3:00 AM this morning. I hear it was an additional 300 pages long. Did you read that? Do you know what those 300 pages contain? It could say "there will be a $2,000 tax placed on every burrito sold at Taco Bell because of the additional carbon in the atmosphere." Can you tell me you know there is no burrito tax in the bill which totals 1600 pages because you have read it and know for sure it doesn't? I am being ridiculous here to make a point. But I think it is ridiculous for any person who claims to be a conservative and votes yes on a bill like this especially when it is several phone books thick and you could not possibly know everything it contains. Just on that basis alone, I would expect any true conservative would vote no.
I would really like hear why you did this. I would like it even more if you can tell me that you have a plan to defeat the bill when it comes back to you after the Senate gets through with it. But in the mean time I am asking myself why I went to the trouble to work so hard to help elect you.
Regards,
Representative Smith,
How can you craft the best possible energy policy starting off with a bill that is 1600 pages long and is unfair to over half the states in our country? You voted on it just hours after a 300 page amendment was added to it. Beans produce greenhouse gasses when people eat them. Can you tell me if there are any carbon taxes in this bill directed at Mexican restaurants? I am being ridiculous because it is ridiculous for any sensible representative to vote on a bill that he hasn't read. This bill will cost millions of American Jobs and burden our citizens with higher energy costs as well as higher prices on everything from Milk and eggs to tennis shoes. On top of it all, this energy bill politicizes the issuing of carbon credits, punishing rural states and rewarding most of the states that voted Blue in the last presidential election. That is just wrong!!
I agree with you that it is a good idea to promote research into alternative energy sources. I already use one alternative myself in my truck. But from what I have learned of this bill it is so laden with pork and so obsessed with Pseudo Science about Global warming that it will do a great deal more harm to our country than good.
I also agree with many commentators that say this is absolutely the wrong time to burden our American Industrial Complex with new and obtuse regulations. That will have the effect of further dampening the economy and chasing manufacturing jobs overseas.
Representative Smith, I would hope that you would look at both sides of an issue before making a decision like this and I urge you to change your vote. The hasty decision of the House, which is certainly not fully informed on this important and far reaching issue is a formula for disaster.
sincerely

Let's not envy Spain's green jobs
Wednesday, June 24, 2009 3:00 AM
By George F. Will
Why, Gabriel Calzada wonders, is the U.S. president recommending that America emulate the Spanish model for creating "green jobs" in "alternative energy" even though Spain's unemployment rate is 18.1 percent -- more than double the European Union average -- partly because of spending on such jobs?
Calzada, 36, an economics professor at Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, has produced a report that, if true, is inconvenient for the Obama administration's green agenda.
Calzada says Spain's torrential spending -- no other nation has so aggressively supported production of electricity from renewable sources -- on wind farms and other forms of alternative energy has indeed created jobs. But Calzada's report concludes that they often are temporary and have received $752,000 to $800,000 each in subsidies -- wind industry jobs cost even more, $1.4 million each. And each new job entails the loss of 2.2 other jobs that are either lost or not created in other industries because of the political allocation of capital. Calzada says the creation of jobs in alternative energy has subtracted about 110,000 jobs from elsewhere in Spain's economy.
The president's press secretary, Robert Gibbs, was asked about the report's contention that the political diversion of capital into green jobs has cost Spain jobs. The White House transcript contained this exchange:
Gibbs: "It seems weird that we're importing wind turbine parts from Spain in order to build -- to meet renewable energy demand here if that were even remotely the case."
Questioner: "Is that a suggestion that his study is simply flat wrong?"
Gibbs: "I haven't read the study, but I think, yes."
Questioner: "Well, then. (Laughter.)"
Actually, what is weird is this idea: A sobering report about Spain's experience must be false because otherwise the behavior of some American importers, seeking to cash in on the U.S. government's promotion of wind power, might be participating in an economically unproductive project.
It is true Calzada has come to conclusions that he, as a libertarian, finds congenial. And his study was supported by a like-minded think tank (the Institute for Energy Research, for which this columnist has given a paid speech). Still, it is notable that, rather than refute his report, many Spanish critics have impugned his patriotism for faulting something for which Spain was praised by Obama and others.
You can find similar conclusions in "Yellow Light on Green Jobs," a report by Republican Sen. Kit Bond, ranking member of the Subcommittee on Green Jobs and the New Economy.
What matters most is not that reports such as Calzada's and the Republicans' are right in every particular. It is, however, hardly counterintuitive that politically driven investments are economically counterproductive. Indeed, environmentalists with the courage of their convictions should argue that the point of such investments is to subordinate market rationality to the higher agenda of planetary salvation.
Still, one can be agnostic about both reports while being dismayed by the frequency with which such findings are ignored simply because they question policies that are so invested with righteousness that methodical economic reasoning about their costs and benefits seems unimportant.
For fervent believers in governments' abilities to control the climate and in the urgent need for them to do so, believing is seeing: They see, through their ideological lenses, governments' green spending as always paying for itself. This is a free-lunch faith comparable to that of those conservatives who believe tax cuts always pay for themselves by stimulating compensating revenues from economic growth.
Windmills are iconic in the land of Don Quixote, whose tilting at them became emblematic of comic futility. Spain's new windmills are neither amusing nor emblematic of policies America should emulate.
moreVoting Question: Why are we buying ANY foreign oil?
I agree that we need to move from fossil fuels fo many reasons but in the meantime while alternative sources are being perfected and applied, our economy is dependent on petroleum.
The largest onshore oil deposit discovered in the last half-century (more than in ALL of the mideast) is in our northern plains. The cost to extract this light oil is estimated at $16/barrel.
The saddest part is that this discovery was made 3 years ago ! At such a low price per barrel, a huge tax could be levied and the monies used to create our new energy infrastructures and the cost of oil would still be significantly lower than we are currently seeing. With this mother-lode of oil reserves, why are we offshore drilling and importing ANY foreign oil?
Had the President's 2006 recommendations of extracting this oil been implemented as well as the recommedations to drill in ANWR been followed, oil from these sources would be bolstering our economy and funding new technology research today. (since both locations already have infrastructure nearby)
HOW can this BE? HOW can we NOT BE extracting this? Why are we are letting a small group of people (GE, the Sierra Club, OPEC, congressional extreme left-wingers, etc..) dictate our lives and our economy?.....WHY?

It seems like everyone attacks dieting with lectures on anorexia and bulimia. I just read about someone wanting to reduce their caloric intake to between 300-400 calories a day and she only got one actual answer, the rest were comments "You're going to die." Granted, the question seemed extreme, and there was more desperation behind it than anything else...but if you consider the alternative...obesity is just as deadly. Atherosclerosis, Myocardial Infarction, Diabetes..and the list goes on and on. Overeating is just as serious, if not worse. Then, when you consider the countless websites that talk about "fasting" for 30 days on WATER ALONE for weight loss and body detoxification, how can you justify what's healthy and what's not? Starving yourself for thirty days is acceptable if you're doing it to detoxify your body...but cutting your caloric intake down is anorexic? It was my understanding that your body had three sources of energy...glucose, glucagon, and fat. Once your body is starved of glucose and glucagon, it turns to its fat store, and you lose weight. EVENTUALLY, your body will eat away at its muscles, but not before the fat..Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm not anorexic or bulimic, nor do I approve of such behaviors. I just see people seeking actual dieting advice being shunned for it. I'm just trying to understand why.I'm not looking for dieting advice either. I don't have a weight problem.

Do you think the US should be investing in Hydrogen technology for the future?
Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe, and Hydrogen is gas is used to power fuel cells, which have the potential of being 95.4% efficient. It is a clean renewable energy alternative, that when used in a fuel cell produces water (clean pure water). It is not only good for the environment but some scientist are researching it as being able to be a self generating source for electricity. the argument against it is it cost a little more to make then drilling for gas and oil or stripping the land away to get to the coal buried beneath. In 2006 the US and World energy agencies all declared that oil reached it's peak production. that is the oil left in the ground can no longer sustain the current rate it is being used. in the nest two or three decades oil may no longer be available to power cars, heat homes, make plastic...
The Hydrogen fuel cell technology is over two hundred years old, but it has not been looked at until the 90s as an alternative. Wouldn't it make sense to commit to using it where it will help purify the waters of the earth, There are no greenhouses gases formed by using it, and every home could have it's own power station, as well as ever car.

moreResolved Question: What do you think of my essay?
A debate is spreading across the world to decide to whether or not nuclear energy should be used over other energy producing sources. I am in the 7th grade of Centennial Senior Public School and I am pro nuclear. Nuclear energy is a key part to preventing climate change. Also, nuclear energy is a great way to provide energy for transport fuels , which will be sparse in the future.
Using Nuclear energy will be an excellent way to prevent climate change. My opponents would defiantly say the world could utilize other energy sources, such as wind, tide, solar, and wave power. These sources may be good for the environment but they cannot replace mass energy producing sources such as coal and nuclear. Those sources are also irregular and unpredictable so they should only be used at a small scale. Coal gives off large amounts of CO2 which is the major problem for global warming. By all means, nuclear energy is the only good replacement for coal. It burns clean and contributes little or no pollution to the environment.
When world oil production stops, we can make use of nuclear energy to produce fuels for transportation such as biofuels, methanol, and hydrogen fuels. We can also use nuclear energy to supply electricity to battery powered cars in the future. Opponents of nuclear energy will surely point out that that the waste that is attained from post-reaction is dangerous and will need 10 000 years of careful storage. This is one of the cons of nuclear energy, but we have containers that can store radioactive materials until the world of science has found a solution of storing or even disposing them during the next 10 000 years.
Oil is running out and global warming is increasing. Nuclear energy is the best alternative to coal and is not irregular like wind, solar, and tide sources. While science is advancing at a rapid rate, we don't need to worry what will happen to the radioactive waste 10 000 years from now because even better solutions will be found. I think making use of nuclear energy rather than coal and other harmful fuels will be a major step in humanity.

Through all this, the Libra is beset by a pervading sense of nostalgia. It is a malignant variety, harking back to a past, which never existed except in the thwarted grandiosity of the Libra. The longer the lack of Narcissistic Supply (attention), the more this past is glorified, re-written, the more you are missed and mourned. This serves to enhance all the other negative feelings. Put together, it already amounts to what might be clinically described as depression.
The Libra then glides into the shores of paranoia (what if i cant get her back?). From his mental closet, he draws a model of a prosecuting world (like its your fault and blame), incorporating in it those around him and events in his recent life. This gives meaning to what is erroneously perceived by the libra as a sudden shift from over supply to under or to no supply (such over and under valuations are typical of him). The apparent diminishing of the Narcissistic Supply is best explained by a theory of conspiracy. The narcissist libra male then – in pain, in despair, in fear – embarks upon an orgy of self-destruction intended to generate "alternative Supply Sources" (attention)

The narcissist libra male then – in pain, in despair, in fear – embarks upon an orgy of self-destruction intended to generate "alternative Supply Sources" (attention) at any cost. moreResolved Question: How Would You grade this?
How would you grade this essay I wrote on nuclear power?
With growing numbers of people in the United States purchasing computers, televisions, appliances, and many other electricity-gobbling devices, the demand for electric power has been surging. Between 1991 and 2000, Americans' electricity usage jumped more than 30 percent. Meanwhile, power plants became extremely difficult and expensive to build, requiring exhaustive and time-consuming scientific studies to determine how the plant would affect the surrounding environment. As a result, relatively few new plants were constructed.
In the summer of 2000, residents of California experienced a severe electricity shortage caused by a complex combination of factors, including a shortage of power-generating capability, skyrocketing prices for the natural gas used to fuel power plants, and exploding demand for electricity. By March 2001, the shortage became so serious that the state's largest utility companies called for rolling blackouts--controlled, successive power outages in designated areas--to avoid even more widespread power outages. Although investigators learned in May 2002 that the crisis was caused in large part by questionable, and perhaps illegal, business practices by the Enron Corporation, an energy company in Houston, it still pointed up weaknesses in the power-generation system in the United States.
The crisis in California exposed the need for greater power-production capabilities throughout the country, forcing energy officials to begin an urgent effort to increase generating capacity. As they sought solutions to the problem, many energy experts said it was time to reconsider nuclear energy as an alternative to fossil fuels (oil, coal, and natural gas).
One of the big advantages of nuclear power plants is that they do not generate greenhouse gases--gases, such as carbon dioxide, that slow the radiation of heat away from the Earth, thereby raising the planet's surface temperature, and possibly contributing to global warming. Power plants that burn fossil fuels produce such gases in abundance, and they also contribute to air pollution. Although nuclear energy has its drawbacks, including the production of radioactive waste and the potential for dangerous accidents, it has been a part of the U.S. energy mix since the late 1950's. In 2002, more than 100 nuclear reactors generated about 20 percent of the nation's energy, second only to coal-fired plants. Plants that burn coal or other fossil fuels produce about 70 percent of U.S. electricity. Of the remaining 10 percent, nearly all is produced by hydroelectric power, electricity generated at dams. Various other energy sources, including windmills, solar-energy, geothermal energy (Earth's internal heat), and waste-burning collectively generate about 1 percent.
In May 2001, U.S. President George W. Bush unveiled his national energy policy, which called for an expanded role for nuclear energy. One of the reasons for the reviving interest in nuclear energy is that it is a very cost-effective way to generate electricity. Nuclear reactions release millions of times more energy than the chemical reactions involved in the burning of fossil fuels. For example, a piece of uranium fuel weighing just 0.04 ounce (1 gram) can release as much energy as the burning of about 2.3 metric tons (2.5 tons) of coal. Moreover, the cost of nuclear power is relatively stable while the prices of fossil fuels are always in flux. To make nuclear energy an even more attractive source of energy, nuclear engineers have been working to develop simpler, safer nuclear power plants that are easier to maintain than the plants operating in 2002.
The two most common types of reactors are boiling-water reactors and pressurized-water reactors. These reactors are often called "light-water reactors" to distinguish them from reactors that use heavy water (deuterium oxide, a special type of water in which the hydrogen nuclei contain a neutron as well as a proton) as the coolant.
In a boiling-water reactor, the water surrounding the reactor core boils, creating steam directly in the reactor vessel. This slightly radioactive steam is sent through pipes to a turbine, which turns electric generators, creating electricity. The steam coming out of the turbine then cools and condenses into liquid water, which is returned to the reactor vessel to be used again.
In a pressurized-water reactor, which is the most common type of nuclear reactor, the water is under extremely high pressure, about 160 kilograms per square centimeter (2,000 pounds per square inch). That pressure enables the water to be heated to about 325 degrees C (620 degrees F), well above its normal boiling temperature of 100 degrees C (212 degrees F). The pressurized and slightly radioactive water from the reactor goes to a steam generator that contains a large number of small tubes through which the hot, pressurized water flows. Water from a separate system flow
moreResolved Question: Is anyone else worried about the societal effect of AWG?
As it stands right now, we mostly believe that AWG is a problem and we need to reduce CO2 emissions to "correct" it. This is reinforced regularly by highlighting extreme weather events like ice shelves in Antartica breaking off, Greenland melting accelerating and melting bogs in the Arctic releasing methane gas. Add to that dying polar bears, floods, droughts, disease, etc. and we have been painted a pretty bleak picture. No wonder Joe Public is a little concerned.
We are basing all this on a concensus of climate experts who say that man, and specifically his CO2 emissions, is primarily responsible. So nature has a small part and man has a large part of driving the earth's climate.
Now let's say climate science actually figures out that nature is by far the larger contributing factor to climate change and man has a very small influence. At that point, we could say that reducing CO2 will have no discernable effect in reducing warming. It may still be prudent to reduce pollution, conserve energy and research alternative energy sources, but not for the reason of reducing global warming.
So my question is, how is Joe Public going to react to this? What if we are now told that global cooling is occurring and this will be much more devastating to man and we need to now prepare for that event. Is Joe Public going to go along? Again?
What if another type of catastrophe is imminent like a near earth object on a collision course which will definitely harm man to a very large degree. Is Joe Public going to believe this as well when we tell him what we need to do to avert that disaster (if we can)?
My concern is that Joe Public might lose all confidence in the scientific establishmend and governments to guide him in important global matters.Bucket22:
Ironically, you are the Joe Public I am talking about. If the psuedoscience you are talking about for alternative theories on climate forcings turns out to in fact disprove the CO2 theory, I wonder how you will handle that.

moreResolved Question: Can you help me with my eco-friendly automotive theory?
Please humor my idea for a moment. I had this idea for an eco-friendly car. Its basically the Ford Fusion only with solar panels covering the car with the fusion generator that is already currently built into it (instead of using gas as a kickstart). The vehicle would gain solar power while the vehicle is parked which juices the battery. As you drive down the road, both axles turn, the gears turn for the generator (fusion) storing energy so the car maintains a solid energy source that can be manually toggled between solar and fusion power usage. I'm not an engineer, but I think at least some part of my idea could be used in creating an eco-friendly, sleek and very cool looking car (5 speed manual, 2 door, seats 4 adults, reflective silver or scratch resistant mirror-like material with black racing strips, the solar panels are built into the racing strips so that it blends into the design, limited power/automatic features so that the battery is not drained too much, vehicle uses 6 car batteries and 2 generators ). A second option is that we could simply buy the same alternative energy hybrid or fuel cell
vehicles that are used currently in the UK.

moreResolved Question: Why doesn't Obama put a freeze on gas prices?
The smart thing to do would be to freeze gas prices so the prices of everything else fall. Almost everything depends on gasoline to be transported. Gas falls, prices of everything else falls as businesses and consumers feel less threatened by oil companies hiking the prices. I'd like to know your opinion on it.
I could deal when gas prices were under $2, but this recent jump is friggin ridiculous! The oil companies have the American people enslaved to their prices. I know it's cheaper than last year, but how much longer can we wait until they skyrocket again? Everyone's had faith in some sort of divine intervention from Obama, but how can looking towards alternative fuel sources help the people now if development takes time? The smart thing would have been to simultaniously drill for oil here (since there's enough in the US alone to power the world for 100 years) while developing new engines that use renewable energy.
All I can say is that we're enslaved at the pump while some greedy oil companies are eating up our money. There has to be a solution and it has to be fast if consumers are ever going to be able to afford anything anymore.

moreResolved Question: Demand is MORE elastic for which of the following?
Demand for electricity today or demand for electricity 5 years from now?
I understand that electricity is inelastic because it is a necessity, but there are so many factors that could affect the demand in the future. Population and alternative energy sources are two examples. In a market perspective, if say, energy produced from solar and wind power increased, wouldn't the competition cause the electric companies we pay now to experience a decreased hold on the market? Then, if the electric companies raised their prices, demand could decrease, making electricity in that sense more elastic. But no matter what, any source would be generating power. The overall demand would increase with population growth, but what about these other factors?
